What do we do in History?

History is concerned with people and how they live, and how human action, now and in the past, has influenced events and conditions. We feel that it is important for pupils to understand that human beings; in shaping their world, making their living, planning their futures, developing forms of government and law, are influenced by what has happened in the past.

History is concerned with people and how they live, and how human action, now and in the past, has influenced events and conditions.  We feel that it is important for pupils to understand that human beings; in shaping their world, making their living, planning their futures, developing forms of government and law, are influenced by what has happened in the past.

At Binsted School we aim to:

  • Foster children’s interest in History,
  • Help children to develop an awareness of how the past and present differ.
  • Develop children’s ability to understand historical change and its causes,
  • Enable children to realise that events can be interpreted in different ways,
  • Help children develop the process of enquiry by undertaking investigations and enquiries using various methods, media and historical sources,
  • Provide a wide variety of materials for the children to use in their investigations into the past.
  • Support children to compare, interpret and analyse different types of evidence from a range of sources,
  • Support children to distinguish between a fact and a point of view,
  • Increase children’s awareness of chronology and develop their use of historical language,

Across the school History is brought to life through educational visits, visitors into school, role play, and practical resources.

Foundation Stage

History in Reception is taught as an integral part of the topic work covered during the year. The Foundation stage curriculum in based around the Six Areas of Learning set out in the Early Learning Goals. There is historic content within the learning area Knowledge and Understanding of the World, in particular children are taught to explore events from their own past.

Key Stage 1 and 2

History in Key Stage 1 is taught on a yearly cycle and in Key Stage 2 a four year cycle. Throughout both Key Stages teaching contains opportunities to find out about key historic events, people and changes. Children begin to develop an understanding of periods of time and the people who inhabited these. As they progress through the school children begin to consider, respond to and debate alternative viewpoints in order to take informed and responsible action in their own futures.
