What do we do in ICT?

Aims

At Binsted, we aim to produce learners who are confident and effective users of ICT to equip them for the future through:

  • discrete ICT lessons in the classroom where they can work individually or in pairs as appropriate
  • using ICT as a tool to support and enrich learning across the whole curriculum
  • enabling them to make informed decisions about how and when to use ICT appropriately
  • providing equipment such as the trolley of laptop computers, an interactive whiteboard in each classroom & access to a digital camera.

Use of ICT in the Curriculum

We are rightly proud of the ICT resources available to our children. There is an Interactive Whiteboard in each classroom which enables teachers to use subject specific programs, material from the internet as well as DVDs or CD ROMs to bring the curriculum to life. The children have access to a trolley of laptop computers so can pursue a highly personalised enquiry route through their study in each subject. The school has a Virtual Learning Environment (Wizkid) which provides further curriculum support.

Structure

Generally we teach a discrete ICT lesson each week. In addition, teachers plan to apply the skills children learn in ICT lessons to support their recording and research in other curriculum areas. This enables skills to be applied in real contexts wherever possible. For example, children learning about spreadsheets in years five and six will use their knowledge in maths and science. The ICT curriculum covers five main areas through a range of units, developing a range of skills. The five main aspects are:

  •  breadth of study,
  • develop ideas and making things happen,
  • exchanging and sharing information,
  • finding things out,
  • reviewing, modifying and evaluating work as it progresses.
