What do we do in Maths?

At Binsted School we believe that Mathematics equips pupils with the uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways.

Mathematics is important in everyday life. It is integral to all aspects of life and with this in mind we endeavour to ensure that children develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them.

We place a great importance on children understanding mathematical processes, concepts and skills and encourage all children to explain their thinking using Mathematical vocabulary. As children develop it is paramount that they have a secure grasp and understanding of number, as well as recall number facts and times tables, as these provide the foundation to further Mathematical learning.

Teaching throughout the school

At Binsted we aim to promote an enjoyment of Maths through a rich and varied curriculum. We believe children should have access to a range of areas of Mathematics including;
  • problem solving and investigating,
  • practical work,
  • collaborative and individual work,
  • learning and understanding of mental and written methods,
  • fluency in recalling number facts,
  • developing a means of communicating findings and strategies used
  • working with computers as a tool for Mathematics.

We aim to give children the opportunity to understand and apply the skills they learn in as many real life situations as possible. At all stages of their school life, children are encouraged to use practical resources and equipment to support their Mathematical development.

Where possible we enable children to make links between different areas of Mathematics and see the importance of Mathematics in other areas of the curriculum for example Science, Art, and Design Technology.
