School Development Priorities 2011-2012

School Development Plan 2011-2012

Improvements during 2010-11

Following the Ofsted inspection in October 2010, the school was left with targets to achieve.

Target Action

1. Secure a Headteacher

The governors are working with the Local Authority to secure a new Headteacher. Federation with another school was investigated by the area manager, but was not successful, due to the personal circumstances of the school approached.  The governors will advertise for a Headteacher in August, for a January appointment. Two people have already expressed an interest which is encouraging news.

2. Raise attainment in English and Maths

Reading

Based on the Summer testing, all year groups have achieved more highly than last year. 80% children within the school as a whole have achieved nationally expected levels or above. In the Key Stage 2 SATs, 85% of Year Six children achieved at least national outcomes or higher.

Guided Reading, where teachers teach a small group of children together, has been credited with some of this improvement.

We are pleased to be able to offer the children new reading scheme books, which have been bought with money raised by FOBS.

The children have also just been given new reading record books. This is to develop the partnership with parents further. It should be noted that although teachers can teach the skills of reading, the children need to practice these at home.

Writing

Almost all year groups have improved their results on last year. 72% children within the school as a whole have achieved nationally expected levels or above. In common with many schools, this is our weaker area and a county inspector will be working in partnership with the staff to build on the progress made this year. We are thrilled that 100% of Year Six children achieved national outcomes in the Key Stage 2 SATs, with 57% exceeding national outcomes.

The partnership with parents in learning spellings has been appreciated. More focused phonics teaching and raised expectations for each group of the quality of writing, has contributed to the improved results.

A small group of our able writers will be further challenged next year by joining an Able Writers group hosted by Bentley School.

Maths

Almost all year groups have improved their results on last year. 84% children have achieved national expectations or above. In the Key Stage 2 SATs 85% of Year Six children achieved at least national outcomes.

A small group of particularly able mathematicians will be joining an extension group hosted by Rowledge School in September.

3. Improve resources in early years, maths and reading

The school has been particularly grateful to FOBS for providing funds to improve our resources. The school is working hard to ensure that the new resources are being well used and are having a positive impact on the children’s learning.

4. Adopt a school-wide handwriting scheme

The school has recently purchased a handwriting scheme called Penpals. The children have had handwriting lessons at least once a week, more for younger children.

The handwriter of the week award has been popular and very successful in raising the standard of handwriting.

In addition to the above targets the school has worked hard to ensure all children are happy and appreciated in school. The ‘Star of the Week’ award has been well received. There have been increased opportunities for sport, both in school and after school. There are now clubs for: multi-skills, football, cricket/tennis and dance. Additionally the science club is very popular. There have been interesting visits and visitors including visits to: Portsmouth and Southsea for geography fieldwork, the Calshot residential week, French Theatre, Orison Prayer Workshop, Circus Skills and visitors such as Susan Piper, a local artist, Yann, the vicar and music teachers.

The school continues to benefit from additional support from Hampshire Local Authority, in seeking to recruit a new Headteacher. Further support has been allocated in the form of three inspector days with our Learning and Leadership Partner, Mr Ian Troup and four days training and support from our English Inspector, Mrs Maire Henry. Both these inspectors are working in partnership with the staff to continue to raise outcomes for all children.

In working towards improving communication with parents the school now distributes:

  1. Fortnightly newsletters. Parents can opt to receive these by email or as a paper copy sent in their child’s reading bag.
  2. Class Curriculum letters. These are sent at the start of each term to ensure parents have a good idea of what their child will be learning.
  3. Reports are sent out twice a year. These are sent in March as progress reports which are followed up with parent teacher consultation meetings. At the end of the summer term a brief report with final assessment results for the year is sent home.

In addition to the above:

  1. Termly “look at work” sessions have continued and have been well attended.
  2. Termly focus assemblies have been re-introduced. Parents are invited to attend these.

Our plans for raising attainment in 2011-12

  1. The school will continue to develop skills to raise standards in English and Maths.
  2. Introduce RRR (Rights, Respect, Responsibility). This is an initiative run by UNICEF to support children in understanding the Rights of the Child. This builds on the strong caring ethos of our school. Additionally it links to the Olympic Values, which will become very important next year.
  3. The school will continue to ensure the children have a vibrant and interesting curriculum, with stimulating visits and visitors.

Sally Hibbert, chairman of the governors, finished off the meeting by thanking all staff for their dedication to the children of Binsted CE Primary School.
